Welcome to Three Bays, Jumping!

Three Bays is a blog following the adventures of three bays: Manny, Diego and Seven. Sometimes their friends too. Training diaries, jump design ideas and various exercises are frequent topics here, so be sure to check them out!

It’s American Thanksgiving weekend, which doesn’t really affect us up here in Canada (except for maybe Black Friday sales!), but I wanted to take some time to acknowledge my little red rocket, Manny. He’s going to be seven next year, and while he still acts like he’s four, he’s slowly getting more mature by the day. And he’s learned so much since we bought him! So, I thought I’d put together a post outlining all the ways I am thankful for Manny getting a little older, and maybe even a little wiser.

This is a great little exercise for sharpening up jumper turns, plus it’s just a heck of a lot of fun for you and your horse!

Here I have the three jumps set roughly 30′ from middle to middle, but you can lengthen that distance for a less turny or experienced horse. I only use cavaletti height jumps for these exercises, because the turns are quite tight and the slices quite steep. Done properly, they will encourage your horse to sit on his butt and power up over the cavaletti, so you don’t want to make them too high and risk overfacing them!

There are several patterns you can do with this configuration, but the video shows my two favourites, the Figure 8 and Advanced Pole Bending. Try them out!

Just wanted to update on my Pallet Jump Fills! Since the post, I’ve made two other sets, and painted the “natural” version from the last post. Here’s what I’ve made, with instructions!

Way back in 2014, I moved to a very dressage focused barn. And they had zero jumps on the property. Zero, zip, nada. But I loved the trainer there, the barn was absolutely gorgeous, and the arena was great. So I began the quest to make my own jumps!

Have some old pallets lying around? So do I! Have horses that are spooky at flowerboxes? So do I! The solution: pallet flower boxes! Super simple, and look very nice once finished.
